The famously ultra-conservative Fox News host Gretchen Carlson shocked many of her viewers Tuesday when she called for legislators to reinstate a ban on assault weapons. Speaking during the “My Take” on her show The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson, she shocked many viewers who were expecting the more typically pro-gun stance that Fox News is known for. “There’s no doubt Omar Mateen was able to kill so many people because he was firing an AR-15,” she said. “A military-style assault weapon, a weapon easier to buy in the state of Florida than buying a handgun. Florida sets a three-day waiting period for purchasing handguns, but the state mandates no waiting period for any gun that requires two hands to hold.” Although Carlson repeated the mistake of many news outlets, referring to the weapon used in the Pulse shooting as an AR-15 rather than a Sig Sauer MCX, the differences are immaterial in relation to gun control regulations. The AR-15 was, however, used in the Sandy Hook, Aurora, and San Bernardino mass shootings.

Carlson also cited last December’s Quinnipiac poll, which concluded that 58 percent of Americans were in support of an assault weapons ban. “Do we need AR-15s to hunt and kill deer? Do we need them to protect our families?” she asked. “Yes, I’m in favor of people being able to carry. I think some of these mass shooting would have been less deadly if that were the case.” “But I’m also with the majority today, taking a stand,” Carlson said, regarding the assault weapons. “Can’t we hold true the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?” For her right-wing viewers, that answer was an emphatic no. The show’s “Question of the Day” on Twitter asked “Should Congress reinstate the assault weapons ban?” Only 11% said yes, compared to 89% saying no. The reactions on twitter were predictably outraged, with people calling for Carlson to be fired and saying that she loves Obama. Troublingly, many also expressed a need for civilians to own assault weapons to use against US troops working for the government.
