The Tanjo English Springer Spaniel Kennels were established in 1982, in South Africa. Tanjo was the first Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) accredited English Springer Spaniel kennel in South Africa. The kennel is owned by Joan Whittingham. After showing numerous locally bred dogs we decided to import. Our first import in 1991 was from Australia, Ch Wongan Moody Blue at Tanjo (Benjamin), a liver, white and tan boy. Our first USA import in 1994 was Ch Salilyn’s Sheer Magic (Zillah). She was the top ESS in South Africa for 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. She was also the top bitch for 2000. She was in the top 100 dogs in South Africa for 1997, 1998 and 1999. She was bred by the late Julia Gasow in the USA and was sired by Ch Salilyn's Condor ex Ch Salilyn's High Regard. She was a full litter sister to Ch Salilyn N Erin's Shameless (Samantha), top Sporting Dog in the USA for 1998 and 1999. Samantha and Zillah's sire won BIS at Westminster Kennel Club in 1992 and Samantha won BIS at Westminster Kennel Club in 2000.

Zillah was joined by Ch The Talking Eyes Big Shot at Tanjo (Zak) in 1998. He was bred by Boris Pegan in the USA, and was sired by Ch Salilyn's Cyclone ex Ch Sieger's Charlotte Hornets. He was the top Springer on the KUSA ratings for 2000. Ch Ramblewood's Temptation at Tanjo (Zoe) joined us in 2002. She was bred by Theresa Miller and Linda Riedel just outside of Seattle. Her sire is Ch Salilyn's Turbulence, and her dam is Ch (Am/Can) Ramblewood Tapestry. She did well in the show ring, was Top ESS for 2003 and 2004, and has now gone over the rainbow Bridge. Ch Dansen's Sincerely at Tanjo (Ocho) our first black and white Springer arrived in 2005. Ocho was bred by Dr Danny Sena in Dallas, Texas. Ocho was the top Springer for 2006 and 2007, and was awarded the KUSA 2007 and 2008 National Springer title. During 2008 we successfully campaigned a black and white puppy bitch we kept from Zoe and Ocho's second litter Tanjo Intrigue (Leila), and she has really done us proud.

She has won Best Puppy in Show five times during her puppy career, with one Group win and a Reserve Best in Show. She completed the 2008 year winning Reserve Best Puppy at the Western Cape Top Dog Competition. She was also the gundog puppy group winner at the Supa 7 competition held in January 2009. She is now a South African champion and is retired from the showring. Danny Sena has attained an American championship on Ch Tanjo N Dansen's Honor, from Zoe and Ocho's first breeding. We have leased Ch (SA/Bosnia/Croatia) Otein N' Talking Eyes Magnitude (Casino) from Boris Pegan, Bob and Lori Nieto. Casino was bred by Lori and Bob Nieto in the USA and has been campaigned by Boris Pegan in Europe. Casino kicked off his South African show career on a high note, with eight group wins and four Best In Show awards to date. He was awarded the 2010 National English Springer Spaniel title. We kept a black and white male pup from the first Leila/Casino litter, Tanjo Jedi Knight, Luke. Luke is PRA and PFK normal (clear).

Luke is now a South African breed champion and an International champion. Luke has had an exceptional show career, surpassing all our expectations! He won the KUSA Gundog Showdog of the year 2015, for the Top Winning Gundog of the year, which was a fabulous achievement! He is once again the National Springer for 2016.. We kept a liver and white male, Tanjo Turbulence (Storm), from the Jessica/Flash breeding and he has been sparingly shown, but has done incredibly well so far, winning Best in Show at the Western Province Kennel Club's All breed show in June 2016.A dog has been miraculously rescued after spending a week trapped at the base of the highest sea cliffs in England.Sprig the springer spaniel was only discovered stuck on rocks near Foreland Point, Devon, thanks to a chance sighting by a volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew in Somerset. The nine-year-old dog had been missing for more than a week in the Minehead area. Rescuers pictured with Sprig aboard after having pulled him down from the isolated mountainside

The rescuers manage to get a hold of Sprig at the water's edge before attempting to get pull him into the boat The rescuers called in a second boat, designed for working close inshore, to help take him off the rock Sprig is hoisted from the rocks after the rescuers spotted him from a distance by pure chance Sprig with his rescuers, from left, Emma Turner, Phil Sanderson, Andrew Escott, Phil Hobbs, Harry Mouzouri, Ross Purvis and Paul Arnold Minehead RNLI had taken the boat close into the cliffs after noticing a sheep that was apparently trapped but were just turning away when a movement some way below the animal caught their eye.Helmsman Andrew Escott said: 'We went in as close as we could and then we could see it was a dog. It was about 30 feet above the water and we couldn’t work out how it had got in that position.'Mr Escott managed to jump ashore and climb up to Sprig. Minehead’s D-class boat - designed for working close inshore - was then called in so the dog could be lowered down safely.

Mr Escott said: 'He had clearly been there for some time because he was licking water off my dry suit. And he did seem rather pleased to see us.'It was only after Sprig had been taken back to Minehead lifeboat station and given food and water that it became clear he had been the subject of a major search by his owners, Mark and Susie Sanders, from Wheddon Cross, near Minehead. Sprig was trapped after he became stuck at the bottom of the cliffs (circled) at Foreland Point Reunited: Owner Robert Sanders and his pet Sprig have been reunited after Sprig spent a week on the rocks They and their family had organised search parties and scoured the area around Foreland Point after the dog disappeared during a walk there on August 22.They had plastered the area with posters appealing for any sightings while local fishing boats and an animal ambulance team from North Devon had checked along the shoreline. But Mrs Sanders said: 'We were coming to the conclusion that he must have wandered off and then been stolen.'I just could not believe it when we had a call to say the lifeboat crew had spotted him and rescued him.'It’s amazing - the best news ever.
