Spotsylvania County Animal Shelter only adopts to Spotsylvania County Residents if the animal is under 16 weeks of age. If you live in any other county or another state, the animal must be altered before leaving Spotsylvania Animal Shelter. All adoptions are based on a first-come first-serve basis on the day the animal is available. You must be at least 18 years of age and provide a current ID. Also, if you have any other pets or children, we suggest that you bring them in to visit before adoption. Most of our animals are strays and we can only guess by observing the behavior of the animal in the kennel/cage and interaction by the shelter staff, whether they are good with other animals or children.

Retractable leashes are NOT permitted. Choke chains are also NOT permitted. Dogs must be accompanied and handled by a registered participant who is at least 18 years old. Each participant may handle a maximum of one dog at a time. Female dogs in heat are not permitted to attend or participate in the walk. At the sole discretion of the Event Coordinators, any dog whose behavior is unruly or might otherwise prove hazardous or unreasonably disruptive to participants, other dogs, volunteers, spectators, or the public will be requested to leave the event. No refunds will be issued to participants who are asked to leave before the conclusion of the walk. All dog walkers must comply with all site location rules not listed above. Working with shelters in the MD/DC/VA area, we place homeless pit bull type dogs in foster homes. There, they are cared for by dedicated volunteers until they are adopted.
