Mocked as Hitler's puppet, Mussolini's only claim to fame became the fact that he made Italy's trains run on time, which they still do today. Now, over half a century later, the Greek government is selling a 50-year lease on the Greek property, called Villa de Vecchi. The villa is being listed for sale by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund with proceeds being earmarked for debt reduction. Villa de Vecchi is one of 13 long-disused properties in the sales portfolio being pitched as potentially small luxury hotels. Three of the properties are being sold freehold while the remainder have leases of between 50 and 99 years, hoping to build on appetite for Greek real estate and tourism. Andreas Taprantzis, executive director for real estate at the Athens-based fund said: "There's been a significant shift in investor sentiment on real estate assets in the past 12 months, both globally and locally. The only criterion is the highest bid per asset." Greece's €50bn asset sale was once touted as the largest ever state asset-disposal plan.
