If you like the formal look of pinch-pleated curtains but you don’t want to deal with traverse draw rods, hang the curtains on pole rods using drapery rings and clips. With rings, you can open and close the curtains simply by guiding them across the pole rod by hand, with no cords and pulleys to become tangled. Rings are versatile -- open and close just one side of the curtain as much as you desire. Curtain rings are available to match prefinished rods, or you may buy unfinished rings and paint or stain them to match your decor. Purchase curtain rings the correct size for the curtain rod. Ring measurements are given for the inside diameter of the ring. The inside measurement of the ring should be about 1/2 inch larger than the diameter of the pole rod so the rings easily slide across the rod. Buy curtain hooks that have sharp pin ends made for pinch-pleated curtains. You’ll need one curtain ring and one hook for each pleat in the curtains, plus one ring and hook for each top corner edge.
Slide the curtain rings onto the rod and hang the rod on the brackets. Attach the end caps or finials now, or wait until the curtains are hung, if you prefer. Lay out the curtains so you can access the pleats at the top. On the back of each pleat, measure 1/4 inch down from the top edge and mark a dot with a fabric marker or pencil. Place the top of a curtain hook at the marked dot. Mark another small dot at the bottom of the curtain hook. Repeat the measured markings on the back of each pleat and at each top corner edge. Insert the sharp pin end of a curtain hook into the lower dot on each pleat, one hook per pleat. Push the hook completely up into the pleat. Insert one hook at each top corner edge of each curtain panel. After insertion, the tops of the hooks should be at the upper marked dots. All hooks should be the same distance from the top edge of the curtain so the curtain hangs evenly. Adjust hook spacing if necessary. Pick up one curtain panel at the pleated top and carry it to the window.
