Real estate scams: how to avoid falling for one Fake landlord asked for money wire transfer before signing lease, showing propertyDachshund Puppies For Sale Near Jacksonville Fl Posted: Aug 21, 2014 6:53 PM ETHonda Prelude Fog Light Bulb Size Last Updated: Aug 21, 2014 6:53 PM ETLg Washer Repair Utah One man is warning others to take precautions when house hunting online after he nearly became the victim of a real estate scam. Tom Mason's search for an Orangville, Ont., home for his family was not going well. All the apartments that interested Mason were quickly snatched up by other prospective tenants. Safety tips for 'Wild West' of online sales Beware of fake Kijiji house rental ads, RCMP warn
Apartment hunters targeted by new online scam Mason decided to take some initiative and placed a wanted ad on the classified site Kijiji. A man who called himself Richard quickly emailed Mason about a rental property. Richard asked for $1,000 a month in rent for a home he said he had initially listed for sale after relocating to Iowa. He now wanted to rent it because, he said, the home had failed to attract a buyer after several months on the market. "Seemed like just the perfect opportunity," said Mason, adding he viewed a video tour of the property. The house wasn’t selling." But the red flags started popping up shortly after their initial correspondence. Richard asked Mason for a wire transfer the next day and promised his wife would soon fly to Toronto to hand over the keys. "There was no way this is for real," said Mason. He contacted the real estate agent on the house listing and discovered Richard was not the property owner. How to avoid a scam
When buying anything on an online classified site, a buyer should meet with a seller in person, said Shawn McIntyre, a community relations manager at Kijiji. "Obviously, you should be really concerned" if anyone asks for money without providing the item, the keys or a lease, he said. Kijiji offers some tips for avoiding real estate scams online: Ensure that you can view the property Beware prices that seem too good to be true Be wary of professional and low-resolution photos Note that flowery descriptions, extensive features lists and repairs needed may signal an ad was copied from a real estate site Use caution around ads that ask for personal information, like age or a SIN number In the company's general tips on how to stay safe while using the site, Kijiji recommends never sending wire transfers. Here is Rosalyn Stevens’ sales pitch for a sleek sailboat, offered for $1,850 on Kijiji: “Buy my stupid ex-boyfriend’s boat: It’s cheap, like his excuses!”
Her ex, whose anonymity has been maintained, bought the boat before they started dating, then offloaded it onto the 28-year-old Almonte, Ont., woman when their love went south this spring. “My stupid ex boyfriend is a commitment-phobe, so I guess it’s no surprise that he wasn’t up to the commitment involved in owning a boat,” she wrote in the ad, adding: “Don’t worry; I’m not a crazy jilted woman. I’ve got the legal right to sell this beauty.” The Post‘s Sarah Boesveld caught up with Ms. Stevens on Wednesday: This is an interesting marketing strategy. You’re hoping some shoppers can sympathize with having a “stupid ex-boyfriend?” When I wrote it, I was in a situation where he’d basically walked away from the storage fees and the moving fees and left me with a boat on my membership at the club and I couldn’t afford to pay for it because I already have my own boat. Did you have a big fight and post the ad in anger? When we broke up, we didn’t talk for a long time.
But we still had to deal with the fact that he had this boat at my house. We’d been friends for 12 years beforehand and then dated for a couple of months — it was a miscommunication that ended it. He lives in Welland, Ont. and I live near Ottawa. Long distance is not easy. And when you throw in other drama and crap it makes it even harder. You sound really ticked off in that ad. I wish he was angrier. That’s the really crappy part. He was so nonchalant, he was like ‘Nope, I can’t take care of it.’ And I was thinking ‘Where is this attitude coming from? Why are you being such an idiot?’ So we were dealing with that and the next day I circulated the ad in my head, thinking ‘How do I sell this boat?’ I texted the headline to a couple of friends and they said ‘You’re an idiot, as if you’re going to put that online. What’s wrong with you? People are going to think you’re crazy.’ The ad has been online since May.I had what I thought were some seriously interested buyers and at the last minute, sort of flaked away.
There are way too many flakes in your life. Some of the responses I’ve had have been ‘You go girl! I have a stupid ex-boyfriend too, I wish I had something of his to sell.’ Other people are saying ‘No wonder he dumped you, you’re crazy! No one’s ever going to date you again!’ That’s my brother’s take on it now, that it’s a surefire way I’ll never get a boyfriend. But I thought ‘You know what? If you can’t laugh at it, you’re not for me.’ Some people might read the line “No amount of work, dedication or patience could save him” and think ‘Was he really that bad?’ I’m having fun with a crappy situation. Has your ex seen the ad? Actually I talked to him last night. He says he hadn’t yet read it, not in detail. He thinks the headline is hilarious. Do you have fond memories of your time on the boat? We had lots of plans. The plan was to take it through the Rideau Canal and across the Great Lakes to Welland, where he lives.
