The biggest difference between allure flooring and Pergo laminate flooring is what it is made of…which affects how and where can be installed. As we outlined in our “Allure Flooring VS Laminate” article, there are several fundamental differences between vinyl plank flooring and laminate flooring. Allure flooring is composed of layers of vinyl and a ceramic bead wear layer (Allure  ULTRA).  It essentially looks like this: Pergo, on the other hand, is a laminate flooring, which means it is composed of several layers of different materials bonded together under extreme heat and pressure.  These layers include: a melamie resin layer that has been enriched by aluminum oxide; a decorative graphic sheet; a HDF (High Density Fiber) board made from recycled wood materials; and a core backing.    Here is a look at one of Pergo’s products (PergoXP): As mentioned above there are some significant differences between vinyl and laminate floors in generals.  Here are a few:
Allure is made of vinyl, which is highly water resistant.  In fact, allure ULTRA is 100% waterproof.  On the other hand, laminate flooring is not meant for moisture prone areas and can easily be damaged if exposed to excessive water and/or flood conditions.   Bottom line is that you won’t have to worry as much about spills if you use allure flooring. Laminate flooring is made from denser material than allure and requires an underlayment.  Some laminate floors have them attached (PergoXP is one of them).   Often times a foam underlayment is required to quiet the laminate floor.  In general, subfloor preparation is typically more expensive and more time consuming when installing a laminate than installing vinyl plank flooring. As a vinyl floor, Allure has more flexibility than laminates.  It  is designed to allow the floors themselves to provide cushioning underfoot.  While a vapor barrier may be necessary for either type of floor, other types of underlayment such as foam is unnecessary for allure floors, and will void the warranty.
Allure, both the GripStrip and Ultra, are manufactured with embossed textures which imitate the look and feel of actual wood or tile.  Many laminates do not.  Pergo does offer products with textured finishes. In general, comparing allure flooring to Pergo is like comparing apples to oranges.  They are each made from different materials, which means each has different limitations.  In general, as a vinyl flooring, Allure is more flexible and can go over most surfaces with little to no floor prep.  It is also designed to be more resistant to water than laminate floors. Pergo is definitely a leader in the laminate flooring sphere.  They offer several improvements over traditional laminate flooring including more protective wear layers, available colors and textured finishes.  In general, when comparing allure vinyl plank flooring to laminate, you’ll find that laminate is more restrictive as to what existing floors it can be installed over.  Additionally, others have found it much easier to repair an allure floor compared to a laminate one.
