Not only must you add the proper chemicals to the water to keep the water safe, you must keep the surface of the tub clean and free of calcium deposits. Cal Spas suggest draining your hot tub every three to four months so you can clean and polish the tub’s surface. They also suggest draining and refilling the tub when the spa chemicals become unbalanced rather than adding additional chemicals. Spray the surface of your empty Cal Spa with an all-purpose spa cleaner. Wipe the spa surface dry with a soft cloth. Apply a cream wax product, designed for spa use, to the surface of your spa with a soft cloth. Rub the product onto the spa surface in a circular motion much like applying a liquid wax to your car. Wipe the wax from the surface once it dries to a haze. Use another soft cloth to buff the surface of your spa after removing the wax. Twist the cartridge filter counterclockwise and pull it from the skimmer. Place the filter in a 2-gallon plastic food-storage bag filled with water to keep it from drying.

Place the end of a garden hose into your Cal Spa skimmer and fill the spa until it reaches the middle of the skimmer or at least 6 inches from the top of the spa. Turn off the water and remove the hose. Look on the front of older Cal Spa pump housings for the air relief valve. Turn the relief valve to the “Open” position to allow the air to escape from the valve. Close the valve after the air bubbles stop escaping from the valve. Newer hot tubs require you to turn on the power to the spa and allow it to automatically run through a self-diagnosis. When the control panel flashes “PR,” press the jets button and allow them to run at low speed for 10 seconds. Press the jets button again to run the pump in high speed for 10 seconds. Press the button to turn off the jets for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat the priming steps until you feel water flowing through all the jets, and you have purged the air from the plumbing lines. Replace the filter and allow the pump to run on low speed for at least two hours with the cover over the hot tub.

Press the “Boost” button if your Cal Spa has a Cal Clarity II Bromine generator. Once the red light glows steadily, press and hold the “Prog” button until the numbers flash on the display. Release the “Prog” button, and then press it once again. The display will then show the total number of dissolved solids (TDS) in the water. Add Bromicharge to the middle of the hot tub. The amount of Bromicharge you use is based on the number of gallons your spa holds. Allow the pump to run for at least 15 minutes, and then use the Cal Clarity II Bromine generator control panel to check the TDS once again to ensure your TDS level is between 3 and 5 parts per million (ppm). Press the “Prog” button until the maintenance level numbers flash. Use the up and down arrows to set the maintenance level to correspond with the number of gallons the tub holds. Skip this step if you own an older Cal Spa without the Cal Clarity II Bromine generator. Add bromine and granular chlorine to the filled spa.

The amount you use is based on how many gallons your spa holds. Refer to the bromine and chlorine product labels for how much of the product to use in your spa. Pour metal protector and oxidizer shock in the center of your spa. Refer to the product labels to determine the correct amount of product to use based on the size of your spa. Find the hose bib connection on the exterior of the spa cabinet or inside the pump housing behind the equipment door. Screw a garden hose to the end of the hose bib. Turn the valve on the hose bib located inside the pump housing to the “Open” position to drain the water from the spa. If your hose connection is located on the exterior of the spa cabinet, pull the connection away from the cabinet until the water begins to flow from the spa. When all the water has been drained, push the connection back into the cabinet or rotate the hose bib valve to the “Closed” position to close the spa drain. Disconnect the garden hose from the bib.
